Learn everything you need to know about radon gas and its effects on your home and health.
Radon (Rn) is a naturally occurring radioactive gas produced by the decay of uranium in soil, rock, and water. It is colorless, odorless, and tasteless — making it impossible to detect without proper testing equipment. It seeps into buildings through cracks in foundations and accumulates to dangerous levels indoors.
When radon gas is inhaled, it decays and releases radioactive particles that can damage lung tissue over time. Long-term exposure is the second leading cause of lung cancer in Canada, responsible for approximately 3,000 deaths per year. Smokers exposed to radon face a dramatically higher risk.
Health Canada's guideline is 200 Bq/m³ — action is recommended above this level. The national average indoor radon level is approximately 47 Bq/m³, but Alberta's average is significantly higher. Edmonton sits in Zone 1, the highest risk classification, with many homes exceeding the action level.
Both radon and carbon monoxide (CO) are invisible, odorless gases that can be deadly — but they are very different. CO is produced by combustion and causes acute poisoning. Radon causes cancer over years of exposure. CO detectors do NOT detect radon. You need a separate radon test to know if your home is safe.
Yes — radon is classified as a Group 1 carcinogen by the World Health Organization (WHO). There is no "safe" level of radon, but Health Canada sets 200 Bq/m³ as the point where action is strongly recommended. The higher the level and the longer the exposure, the greater the cancer risk.
Radon enters homes through: cracks in foundation walls and floors, construction joints, gaps around service pipes, cavities in walls, and through well water. Because homes are warmer than the surrounding soil, they create a slight vacuum that draws radon-laden soil gas in. Basements have the highest concentrations.
